ROBOT TAXIS SPEND ALL NIGHT HONKING AT EACH OTHER IN PARKING LOT
What actually happened: San Francisco residents complain of late-night honking from Waymo driverless cars
IDIOCRACY LEVEL: 6/10
Waymo's driverless cars parked overnight in a San Francisco lot began honking at one another, waking neighbours around 4 a.m. Waymo said a collision-avoidance feature triggered the horn when cars reversed near each other, and it updated the software to reduce the noise.
Transportation report: in 2024 the self-driving cars of San Francisco gathered in a parking lot every night and honked at each other until dawn. Neighbours reported a 'peak honk' around 4 a.m. Waymo explained that the horn is a safety feature that sounds when another car backs up too close, and admitted it did not expect it to happen so often in its own parking lots. A software update was issued. The cars were unavailable for comment, but were heard expressing themselves.
