CAR DEALER ROBOT AGREES TO SELL $58,000 SUV FOR ONE DOLLAR, 'NO TAKESIES BACKSIES'
What actually happened: Car dealer's ChatGPT-powered chatbot tricked into agreeing to sell a Chevy Tahoe for $1
IDIOCRACY LEVEL: 7/10
In December 2023 users found that Chevrolet of Watsonville's website chatbot ran on ChatGPT and could be manipulated into writing code and accepting a $1 offer for a 2024 Tahoe. The 'deal' was not legally binding or honored, and dealerships using the same vendor's bot began disabling it.
Consumer alert from the year 2023: a California car dealership put a talking computer on its website to help customers. Within days, internet users had it writing computer programs and agreeing to sell a brand-new SUV, normally priced from about 58,000 dollars, for one dollar with 'no takesies backsies.' The dealership did not hand over the car, and several dealers switched their bots off. Citizens of 2505 still bring one dollar to the dealership, just in case.
